Hoofprints
in the Sand: Wild Horses of the Atlantic Coast
By Bonnie S. Urquhart
Pub Date: April 2002. Many theories surround the
origins of the wild horses that inhabit the barrier islands
of the Eastern seaboard. Did they swim ashore from ships
that sunk en route from Spain to the New World? Were they
left behind by early settlers to eke out a tenuous existence
in harsh environs? Author Bonnie Urquhart investigates
how these wild herds came to populate islands from Assateague
in Virginia to Cumberland in Georgia.
During her research for Hoofprints in the Sand,
she spent long hours in libraries and salt marshes separating
fact from myth. Urquhart learned that each population
of horses has its own character, its own history, and
its own set of problems and concerns, and that in most
cases these animals made a unique contribution to local
history.
Hoofprints in the Sand brings these ponies to life
and offers a vivid portrait of the islands they call home.
Bonnie S. Urquhart lives in Hershey, Pennsylvania. She
became interested in the plight of Eastern seaboard ponies
during a visit to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. This
is her first book.

****
"Bonnie
Urquhart tackles the topics in a beautifully written manner.
She discusses the different herds and the individual traits
of each herd, along with the population numbers of each
group. Best of all, the text is loaded with outstanding
photographs taken by the author. I'd go see a show of
her photographs in a heartbeat! I highly recommend this
book for both the artistic expression contained within,
as well as the in-depth research on the wild horses and
ponies."
