Women
of the Year: Ten Fillies Who Achieved Horse Racing's Highest
Honor
Jacqueline
Duke, editor
Pub Date: October 2004. Horse
of the Year is the highest honor bestowed in Thoroughbred
racing. Only ten female horses have been accorded this
honor, the most recent being Azeri, who earned the title
in 2002. Women of the Year profiles these
ten outstanding fillies, their owners and trainers, and
looks at how the times in which they ran shaped their
careers.
In addition to Azeri, these honorees include the
following great mares:
- Miss
Woodford, a filly so highly regarded that racing
historians designated her Horse of the Year twice, in
1883 and 1884
- Imp,
a popular turn-of-the-century runner known as the Coal
Black Lady
-
Beldame, who lives on through a prestigious race
named in her honor
- Regret,
the first of only three fillies to win the Kentucky
Derby
- Twilight
Tear,
a World War II heroine for famed Calumet Farm
- Busher,
who became a star for movie mogul Louis B. Mayer
- Moccasin,
the only two-year-old filly ever to receive the title
- All
Along, the French superstar who conquered America
- Ladys
Secret, the "Iron Lady" who raced for
Hall of Fame trainer D. Wayne Lukas in the mid-1980s.
The
authors who bring these fillies stories to life
include the award-winning writers Edward L. Bowen, Steve
Haskin, Avalyn Hunter, and John McEvoy, plus The Blood-Horse
editor-in-chief Ray Paulick and senior staff writer David
Schmitz; Eclipse Press editors Tom Hall and Judy L. Marchman;
and The Blood-Horse correspondents Craig Harzmann
and Eliza McGraw.
Each writer brings his or her own perspective to the filly
being profiled, and editor Jacqueline Duke has compiled
a wonderful collection of stories and styles. But one
constant holds throughout the book: These Women
of the Year are celebrated for their remarkable
achievements, all forever linked in an elite sisterhood.
