Sunday
Silence: Thoroughbred Legends
Ray Paulick
Sunday Silence had a hard
time earning respect. No one would buy him at auction
as a young horse. His family tree wasnt exactly
blue-blooded -- more working class. With his dark looks
and skinny build, he seemed more like a street fighter
than an elegant Thoroughbred.
But on
the racetrack, those hard-knocking
instincts kicked in and Sunday Silence
gave the racing world some of its most
exciting moments. He captured the 1989
Kentucky Derby in the mud, battled rival
Easy Goer the length of the stretch to
prevail in the Preakness, and took the
Breeders Cup Classic in another
scrappy finish with Easy Goer.
Respect still wasnt
forthcoming and he was sold to Japan for stud duty. There,
Sunday Silence has ruled the stallion ranks with an iron
fist; his sons and daughters repeatedly winning at the
top levels. And with Sunday Silence, the working
class colt finally gets his due -- and some respect.
