The
Equid Ethogram: A Practical Field Guide to Horse Behavior
Sue
McDonnell, Ph.D.
Pub Date: January 2003. The Equid
Ethogram provides the first comprehensive catalog
of horse behavior and is an invaluable reference for researchers,
veterinarians, students, and horse enthusiasts.
This landmark work organizes horse behavior in six categories:
maintenance behavior, general social communication, intermale
interaction, reproductive behavior, play, and domestically
shaped and aberrant behavior. The specific behaviors in
each category are identified, described, and illustrated
with original line drawings in a user-friendly format.
The Equid Ethogram also contains photographs
of hundreds of behaviors.
In addition to horses, The Equid Ethogram
recognizes behaviors in zebra, donkeys, and Przewalski
horses.
Sue McDonnell, Ph.D., a world-renowned equine behaviorist,
started compiling the nucleus of The Equid Ethogram
fifteen years ago. At the University of Pennsylvanias
New Bolton Center, she established a herd of ponies whose
day-to-day existence in semi-natural conditions enabled
many of the books original observations.
The Equid Ethogram provides fascinating
insight into how horses behave in their natural environments
and their tremendous ability to conform to the demands
of man.
Dr.
McDonnell is the founder of the Equine Behavior Program
at the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary
Medicine. She is known internationally for her research-based
scientific approach to equine behavior. She is the author
of Understanding Horse Behavior and has contributed
to numerous books and journals.

Praise
for Sue McDonnell and The Equid Ethogram:
"Equid
Ethogram is a totally cool book...It's just nice to
know someone out there thinks horses are worth studying."

"Professor
McDonnells work has shown how sensitive we should
be to the nature of horses if we wish to get the most
out of them. In highlighting how some unwelcome responses
are simply normal behaviours, she has redefined best practice
in horse breeding."
-- Paul McGreevy, BVSc, PhD, MRCVS, Senior
Lecturer, University of Sydney
****
"Sue
McDonnell is one of the horse industrys greatest
resources. Whether her subject is a multi-million-dollar
Thoroughbred breeding stallion or a 'problem pony,' Dr.
McDonnell succeeds in resolving behavior issues."
-- Kimberly Herbert, editor, The Horse
magazine

"Sue
McDonnell has been at the forefront of the discipline
of equine behavioural medicine especially through her
work on stallion behaviour. Equine behaviour has grown
enormously in the last few years as an area of serious
scientific research and it is essential that scientists
talk a common language. The production of The Equid
Ethogram is therefore both timely but also an invaluable
contribution to the future development of the discipline
along a sound scientific path.

Lecturer in Behavioural Studies and Animal Welfare, University
of Lincoln, UK
