Rode the Red Horse: Secretariat's Belmont Race
Barbara
M. Libby
Pub
Date: April 2003. Secretariat deserved his reputation
as a Superhorse. In 1973, he won the Triple Crown, the
first horse in 25 years to win racings hardest test.
His picture appeared on magazine covers and on the front
pages of newspapers everywhere.
Secretariats triumph took place at a time when America
was suffering. The war in Vietnam dragged on, students
demonstrated in the streets, and President Nixon was in
trouble for Watergate.
With his bright chestnut coat and great speed, Secretariat
gave America hope. I Rode The Red Horse tells the
story of Secretariats historic victory in the Belmont
Stakes through the words of his jockey, Ron Turcotte,
and through the luminous pastel illustrations by author
Barbara Libby. Secretariat won by an amazing 31 lengths
in record time that no horse has come close to matching.
This
is a book to be treasured, not only by children but also
by racing fans everywhere.
