Legacies
of the Turf: A Century of Great Thoroughbred Breeders
(Vol. 1)
Edward
L. Bowen
A
ForeWord Magazine "Book
of the Year" Winner! The ForeWord
Book of the Year awards recognize excellence in publishing
from independent presses.
Pub Date: November 2003. Some
of Thoroughbred racings greatest champions -- horses
like Man o War, Citation, Swaps, and Secretariat
-- are the handiwork of a remarkable parade of individuals,
ranging from full-time horsemen and cowboys to renowned
capitalists and philanthropists.
In volume 1 of Legacies of the Turf, renowned racing
historian Edward L. Bowen tells the stories of the early
20th centurys powerhouse racing dynasties
the Whitneys, Woodwards, Wideners, and Hancocks, as well
as the ones who started it all, such as James Keene, John
E. Madden, and August Belmont II.
Other breeders whose stables influenced racing in the
early to mid-century include Alfred G. Vanderbilt, owner
of Native Dancer, one of racing's greatest progenitors;
Warren Wright of Kentucky, who built Calumet Farm into
the dominant breeding and racing force in the mid-20th
century; Mrs. Gladys Phipps' Wheatley Stable; and Walter
Salmon's Mereworth Farm. These men, women, and their horses
were all interconnected, and as readers trace the years
through the chapters, examples become readily apparent.
For instance, without Mereworth's Discovery, there would
have been no Native Dancer.
Persistence
and hard work, plus the all-important luck, played strong
roles in helping these men and women build the great breeding
operations that gave horse racing its biggest stars.
Volume
2 of Legacies of the Turf, to be published in Fall
2004, will focus on the great breeders whose horses have
influenced racing in the second half of the 20th century
(and beyond).
