More Old Friends
Visits With My Favorite Thoroughbreds
By Barbara D. Livingston
Pub Date: October 2007. From 1988 Kentucky Derby winner Winning Colors to the gentle backyard stallion Urigo, award-winning photographer Barbara D. Livingston continues her tribute to horse racing’s retirees in More Old Friends. Picking up where she left off in the original volume, Livingston combines unforgettable portraits and moving essays to capture the dignity and spirit of nearly 100 aging Thoroughbreds.
More Old Friends recounts the careers and celebrates the graceful old age of such well-known stars as supersire Storm Cat, champion Miesque, and the undefeated Personal Ensign. Forgotten horses also get their due, among them Calumet Farm’s Sugar and Spice and the residents of Our Mims Retirement Haven. In one especially poignant chapter, Livingston recounts visiting the sprint champion Precisionist, then 25, the day before he died.
Livingston’s fondness for racing’s senior citizens has taken her across the country and back in a quest to chronicle their tales before it is too late. Her first collection of their stories, Old Friends, appeared in 2002, a time when the plight of unwanted racehorses was garnering public attention. One advocate for retired racehorses was so moved by Livingston’s book that he obtained her permission to use the name Old Friends for his equine old age home in Kentucky.
More Old Friends introduces some new Thoroughbred seniors and reacquaints readers with others with the loving respect that is uniquely Livingston’s.

"Sequels are seldom as compelling as the original but that's clearly not the case with More Old Friends. Barbara Livingston inspired us to start a Thoroughbred retirement home in Kentucky through her insightful photographs and crisp writing. Anyone can take a picture of a horse but very few photo artists can capture the unique qualities that makes each of these great athletes distinctive. ... She allows the horse to be a horse and not a contrivance designed to fit human expectations. The horses are very fortunate to have such a talented, dedicated chronicler.”
--Michael Blowen, Founder and President of Old Friends Thoroughbred Retirement

“Livingston is a two-time Eclipse Award-winning photographer who is also a graceful writer and dedicated reporter of the stories behind the horses that attract her gifted eye.”
--Jay Hovdey, Daily Racing Form

"This is truly a romantic book, filled with quiet heroism and undying love, and the kind of simple stories that give you goosebumps and bring tears to your eyes."
--Crystal Brumme Kimball, The Equiery
