Horses of the Storm
The Incredible Rescue of Katrina's Horses
(Includes an Emergency Preparedness Guide)
by Ky Evan Mortensen

Pub Date: May 2008.
On August 29, 2005, the United States suffered one of the worst natural disasters ever when Hurricane Katrina slammed into southern Louisiana and parts of the Gulf Coast. Various accounts placed the eventual death toll at more than 1,800 and property damage at more than $81 billion. But in the midst of destruction and chaos was born the largest equine rescue ever.

"...The unknown is a dangerous thing and can be incredibly fearsome ... One thing was certain -- humans were being evacuated and animals were not. So what would happen to the animals?"

The answer lay in the incredible rescue efforts spearheaded by Louisiana State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine and a dedicated team of heroic staff and volunteers. Thanks to them, hundreds of horses and thousands of other animals were saved.

Horses of the Storm tells their stories.

About the author:

Author Ky Mortensen has lived and breathed horses his entire life. As a kid growing up on a dairy farm in southern Colorado, Mortensen would often trail ride and camp with his Arabian mare, Bianca. Later, Mortensen rode bulls and played polo at Colorado State University. Having graduated with an equine science degree, Mortensen gravitated toward the Bluegrass State to fulfill his dream of working professionally in the horse world. After gaining experience working at the Breeders’ Cup, The Jockey Club, and the American Association of Equine Practitioners, Mortensen moved from Kentucky to Louisiana to become the director of advancement at the Louisiana State University Equine Health Studies Program. There, he raises funds and awareness for the equine program and handles marketing, public relations, and public outreach.

In 2005, Mortensen -- along with members of the LSU Equine Health Team -- rescued hundreds of horses following the devastation caused by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It was one of the most difficult -- and most gratifying -- times of his life. Mortensen says that Horses of the Storm was a story just waiting to be told. Mortensen lives with his wife and family in Baton Rouge, La.
