Matriarchs, Volume II: More Great Mares of Modern Times
By Edward L. Bowen
Pub Date: August 2008
Thoroughbred stallions get all the glory and command the big bucks but experts agreethat it is the mare who contributes the bulk of genetic material (mitochondria) to the offspring. Many consider mares to be the dominant breeding influence. Matriarchs Volume II celebrates the mare and give the girls their due. The first edition is so rare and coveted by pedigree experts, Thoroughbred breeders, and racing fans alike that collectors have driven the used book price well above the original cover price.
Matriarchs, Volume II: More Great Mares of Modern Times continues the same focus as the out-of-print previous title, Matriarchs: Great Mares of the 20th Century. It features all-new profiles of 22 great mares that have had a profound impact on Thoroughbred racing. Their offspring include Kentucky Derby winners Funny Cide, Monarchos and Fusaichi Pegasus as well as numerous international champions.
