of the Turf Wins Book of the Year Award
Legacies
of the Turf: A Century of Great Thoroughbred Breeders
(Vol. 1) has won ForeWord Magazine's 2003
Book of the Year Award in the sports category. Written
by racing authority Edward L. Bowen and published by Eclipse
Press, a division of Blood-Horse Publications, Legacies
of the Turf tells the stories of the powerhouse racing
dynasties that dominated horse racing in the early to
mid-20th century. The book competed against a number of
other compelling finalists in the sports category, including
George Plimpton on Sports, and was honored as the
winner June 4, 2004, at BookExpo America in Chicago.
"The ForeWord Magazine award validates the
important contribution to the Turf literature that Legacies
represents. Eclipse Press is fortunate to work with an
author of Ed Bowen's stature and expertise," said
Jacqueline Duke, Eclipse Press editor.
Eclipse Press will publish volume II of Legacies of
the Turf this fall. The second volume will profile
the great breeders of the second half of the 20th century.
Bowen has written numerous books for Eclipse Press, including
biographies of Man o' War and War Admiral as well as Matriarchs:
Great Mares of the 20th Century and Dynasties:
Great Thoroughbred Stallions. He is president
of the Grayson-Jockey Club Foundation, which raises money
for equine research. Bowen lives in Versailles, Ky.
