Ruffian: Thoroughbred Legends
Milton C. Toby

When she raced, Ruffian was untouchable. The beautiful, near-black filly would dance away from her opponents with astounding ease and win while hardly breaking a sweat. Appearances were deceiving, however.

Ruffian always gave her all, right from the beginning. She devastated her competition at age two, then continued that pattern at three. Her peers couldn’t match her speed and strength and her next battle would be against males. In the spirit of the times -- tennis greats Billie Jean King and Bobby Riggs had met in a Battle of the Sexes in 1973 -- Ruffian in 1975 met that year’s Kentucky Derby winner Foolish Pleasure in the fateful match race that would take her life and cement her legend for all time.

Author Milton C. Toby is a Lexington, Ky., attorney who has been involved with horses for most of his life. He has shown American Saddlebreds, competed in hunter, combined training, and dressage events, and acted as a steward for the American Horse Shows Association. He also has worked as a horse racing journalist and photographer. Toby co-authored with his law partner Karen Perch two books in Eclipse Press' Horse Health Care Library: Understanding Equine Law and Understanding Equine Business Basics.

Praise for Milt Toby and Ruffian:

"An elegantly made book and a quick read. Even if you are not into racing, you may find yourself inspired to check out the rest of the (Thoroughbred Legends) series of books."
