Exterminator : Thoroughbred Legends
Eva Jolene Boyd

Pub Date: October 2002. Exterminator was one of horse racing’s first superstars. Racing in the early part of the 20th century, the rangy bay gelding known affectionately as “Old Bones” went from backup performer to the spotlight in 1918 when he won the Kentucky Derby. Exterminator had been the workmate of stable star Sun Briar, who ended up unable to run in that Derby. Exterminator was substituted and brought home the roses.

Over the next six years, this iron-willed horse continued to impress racing fans wherever he ran. He won 50 of 99 races during his long career and was retired to the farm of his owner, the charming and eccentric Willis Sharpe Kilmer. Exterminator spent the rest of his days enjoying the good life, accompanied by his pony companion, Peanuts.

Remarkable to the last, Exterminator died at the age of 30 in 1945. He is still remembered as one of horse racing’s greatest Legends.

Author Eva Jolene Boyd also wrote Native Dancer in the Thoroughbred Legends series.
